About Shield Driving School

Jeremy Hughes is our general manager. After retiring from a great career in law enforcement, he started as a part-time driving instructor in January 2018. He taught thousands of students from 16 up to 94 years of age. Over the years, he's enjoyed seeing his students better understand the laws and rules of the road, learn the fundamentals of operating a vehicle, and become safer drivers. As the general manager, he sees all our students come through the program and progress into their driving test. In his free time, he loves to travel with his wife and daughter, especially to the beach. They also spend a lot of time together hunting, fishing, and doing pretty much anything that involves being outdoors. He feels very blessed to be a part of the Shield Driving School team and lead the finest driving instructors in the area. As you will see for yourself, we have built a great family at Shield Driving School.

Jeff Piper served for 26 years with the Pennsylvania State Police. He also worked as a Dauphin County Sheriff. He attended Kutztown State College, where he majored in biology. As an avid motorcycle rider and instructor, he has enjoyed cruising the country on two wheels with the wind in his face. Married with four children and grandchildren, he loves to travel abroad and see the world. His future goals include learning to dive and doing so in Australia. He also plans to visit Bora Bora very soon. In his downtime, he loves to spend time with his wife and offspring, sing, and play music.

Mike Farling is a 32-year law enforcement veteran of the Swatara Township Police Department. He ran their first-ever K-9 unit. As a dedicated officer, he continued to advance through the ranks and eventually ran the township crime unit for the last seven years of his career. He ultimately retired as Detective Sergeant. It has always been a passion of Mike's to help people, both on the right and wrong side of the law. He especially loves to help people achieve their dreams of getting a driver's license at Shield Driving School.

Tim Sanville graduated in 1986 from West Chester University with a degree in health and physical education. Following his love for teaching, He became a physical education teacher in the Millersburg School District, where he retired after 31 years of employment. He became a soccer official in 1984 and a track official in 2011. He currently does both in his spare time. In addition, he has coached soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, and track. He enjoys spending his free time with my two sons and three grandchildren.

Laney Willard has a background in education. She has had many years to hone the patience that she brings to the passenger seat. She believes creating the best learning environment possible is important, which can only be accomplished if the student feels comfortable and relaxed. She enjoys teaching students from various backgrounds and ages and is bilingual in English and Spanish. As someone who loves driving and teaching, she loves that as a driving instructor, she can do both at the same time. She is passionate about empowering a new generation to become safe, confident drivers.

Jason Brimmer is originally from Central Pennsylvania. He spent 20 years as a journalist, mostly in Delaware, while raising a family of three children. After moving back to Pennsylvania, he returned to my first love -- teaching. Now, he spends days during the school year teaching English and journalism at Marian Catholic High School. He teaches driving for Shield Driving School in the summers and after school. He enjoys teaching in all forms because there is a unique joy in seeing someone master a new skill. He also continues to learn new things from his students, both at school and in the car. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with my family, reading, and playing games.

Perry Capurro hails from Brooklyn, NY and Smithtown, Long Island. As a college graduate, he became a school paraprofessional for special education. He also was a driving instructor with AAA Central Penn in Lancaster, PA, before coming to Sheild Driving School. He is a Red Cross blood donor and frequently volunteers with the Special Olympics. He currently resides in East York, PA, where he enjoys bowling, fishing, traveling, and watching movies.

Reggie Johnson has ten years of experience in law enforcement and corrections. Heralding from Newport News, VA, he also worked for eight years in education. He is married with three sons, two stepdaughters, four dogs, and a turtle. As a former athlete, football coach, mentor, and motivator, he endeavors to help others reach their fullest potential in life. Because of his calm demeanor and nature, he motivates and encourages new drivers to exhibit their best attitude behind the wheel. He is a die-hard fan of the Miami Dolphins, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the New York Yankees.

Ray Magaro is a retired police officer who specialized in traffic safety. That involved accident investigations, accident reconstruction, speed enforcement, and enforcement of the motor vehicle laws of Pennsylvania. He is also a chauffeur at Linglestown Fire Co, a school bus driver (for 42 years), and a tractor-trailer driver for Pepsi Cola. He has a Class A CDL license with every class and every endorsement. He has taught CDL school bus classes and was an examiner for school bus licenses. He graduated from HACC with a degree in police administration and from Penn State University with a degree in social science. He is also a PA emergency medical technician and serves with a local ambulance association. Driving various types of vehicles has given him great insight into teaching and evaluating driver's license permit holders. He tries to make learning and testing a positive experience for his students.

Terry Mesec enlisted in the Marine Corps in May 1993 and retired as a Master Sergeant in 2014. During his military tenure, he served as a drill instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC. He has been deployed to Iraq three times, as well as to Afghanistan. As a married father of two, he enjoys teaching and watching my students succeed.

Jason Miller grew up in the Mechanicsburg area. After graduating from Cumberland Valley High School, he attended Penn State University. Then, he ventured west to Colorado, where he worked as a deputy sheriff for approximately 14 years. In his free time, he enjoys fishing and spending time outdoors with my family. While working at Shield Driving School as a driving instructor, he will always strive to provide each student with a safe and comfortable learning experience. It is very rewarding to see the smile on a student's face when they pass their test and obtain their driver's license.

Brian Royer has been an instructor for Shield Driving School since 2020. He retired from Central Dauphin School District after serving 31 years as a health and physical education teacher. He also coached football, track, wrestling, and soccer. His interests and hobbies include archery, hunting, fly fishing, biking and hiking, downhill skiing, and most outdoor activities. Most of all, he enjoys helping new drivers become the best and safest drivers during their one-on-one driving experience.

Brian Walborn was born and raised in the Harrisburg area. He attended and graduated from Central Dauphin High School. After college, he served two years of active duty in the US Army. Immediately after the military, he served as a police officer with a local police department and retired after 31 years. He wanted to help people, so he decided to assist people of all ages with learning how to drive. Working at Shield Driving School allows Brian to accomplish that goal.

Ron Zeigler is a behind-the-wheel driving instructor who enjoys working with teenagers to help them improve their driving skills. After graduating from Towson University, he was a secondary science teacher in the Baltimore County School District for six years. While teaching, he felt called to the pastoral ministry and went to seminary. After graduation, he served as a pastor for over 20 years in Central PA. Now, he serves in Harrisburg with the Ministry to State as the state capitol minister for PA. For 34 years, he has been happily married to my lovely wife, Kathy, and is a blessed father of four amazing adult children. In his free time, he enjoys all outdoor activities, including corn hole, kayaking, hiking, fishing, and various backyard games. His newest favorite is Kubb. He loves reading about theology, history, government, and biographies.
